After two days, and as we begin day three, I thought I would quickly post that Coachella has been pretty ridiculous. So many good bands have been seen (Muse, Jay-Z, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Pssion Pit, just to name a few), and at least as many have been missed. There have been many good times, and very few downer moments. (The start on Friday was one HUGE downer moment that turned out just fine in the long run.)

Before we head in today, we’ll hit the pool again. My day of musical mayhem will begin with Florence + the Machine, who had the number one spot in my top Albums of 2009.

I’ll do a full recap of Best and Worst moments, because everyone likes reading those. Right?

Enjoy your day, as I’m sure to enjoy mine.

I had Passion Pit in studio when they came through town to play a show at Urban Lounge last year, and now I’m featuring their new single “Little Secrets”. Their album Manners took number five on my Top 10 Albums of 2009. I’ve been hestitant to play this song because of the reaction I had when the band was in studio, but the listeners never cease to surprise me.

Reaction to the song was more positive than I expected. Jeff said, “that is one of the coolest songs I’ve heard in a long time.” He also said the vocals kept reminding him of Perry Ferrell of Jane’s Addiction and Porno For Pyros. Natalie said, “reminds me of jackson 5. I didnt dig it.” Pauly said he kinda liked it but wouldn’t expect to hear it on the End.

If you missed today’s Spotlight, you can hear the song here. Find Passion Pit on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and their official website.

What do you think of the song?

It’s time, ladies and gents, for my year-end top 10 list. If you missed the 2008 list, read it here.

This time of year it seems that EVERYONE is doing a top 10 albums of the year list. And sometimes I read the big publications’ lists and think, “How the hell did you include that album?!” This list was compiles entirely by yours truly. If you think some of these don’t belong, well, that’s where your wrong. These are MY top 10 albums of 2009, and hopefully you’ll enjoy many of them, too. (Song titles that are in bold are streaming after each entry.)

So when Santa drops off gift cards for iTunes/Amazon/eMusic in your stocking, these are some suggestions for spending that free cash on some music that I think is pretty dang good.

Let me know what you think of this list in the comments section. What are some of YOUR favorite albums that aren’t listed here?

10. Muse – The Resistance (Sep 15): This album was included in my recent Twenty-some Suggestions post, and is one of several from that mini-series that made the end-of-year list. Muse have been trying to take over America for since their 2004 album Absolution was released. Along with a solid tour schedule, and an amazing (if lip-synced) live show, this band has become a favorite to the Twilight set as they have appeared on both of the soundtracks for the Twilight Saga movies. It’s never a bad thing to be on the hottest soundtrack of the year, that’s for sure. But beyond that, they consistently make great music. The lead single from The Resistance, “The Uprising,” has been #1 on the Modern Rock charts for something like three months! This album may not be chock full of hit singles, but it is chock full of great songs (and even an orchestral suite!). In addition to the single, check out “Undisclosed Desires” and “I Belong To You (+Mon Coeur S’ouvre A Ta Voix)“.

Passion Pit is a band that I have been telling everyone with ears to listen to since I first got a hold of their EP Chunk of Change back in January. They have since released a full length titled Manners where you can find the original version of today’s Spotlight. I had Mike in studio today to talk about the album, band and the show tonight at Urban Lounge (21+) and he performed a very stripped down and soulful version of “The Reeling”.

You can listen to the interview and performance here:

Reaction to the song wasn’t too positive, but I think it was more a reaction to this version of the song. I’ll have to play the album version one day and see what the difference is. Steve called in and said, “It wasn’t very good live.” While Mike said, “I thought it was pretty good. It makes me really want to hear the studio version.” Texters were of similar minds; Jentz said, “i dont like it that much.” Angie, however, said, “i like it maybe not for regular radio play but something i would like to listen on my own terms. Great stuff!”

If you missed today’s Spotlight, you can hear the album version of “The Reeling” on the band’s MySpace page. You can also find Passion Pit on Facebook, Twitter and their official website.

What do you think of the song?

I just finished writing an email to some of my friends and family with these suggestions of bands to check out. When I was almost finished, I thought to myself, “This would make for a good blog post.” And so I copied the meat and potatoes of the email and pasted it right here for you, because I love you that much.

So here you are, twenty-some bands you should check out. Believe me, your ears will appreciate what you’ve done for them.

Each suggestions comes with a blurb and a link to the band’s MySpace page so you can preview before going about either purchasing or illegally downloading (not a suggestion, I just know how you thieving bastards work!). Read on, if you dare…

It should be no secret that I’m a huge music lover. I’m always on the look out for my next favorite band, and recently I found them.

I first heard of Passion Pit on MTV2′s Subterranean. Just about the only time they play music videos anymore. It’s a very indie-rock based show. This is the same show that introduced me to Tegan & Sara years ago, to give you some perspective.

So it came as no surprise that I would fall in love with a video that I saw recently on the very same show.

Passion Pit is from Boston, specifically Emerson College, and their EP Chunk of Change is rumored to have been a present from lead singer Michael Angelakos to his then-girlfriend. Pretty nice gift, if you ask me. The band grew in popularity in Boston and have started to blow up in the blogosphere. The song “Sleepyhead” can be found in regular rotation on Subterranean and college radio.
