The new Smashing Pumpkins, which reformed and released Zeitgeist in 2007, are working on an epic 44-track album that is being released one track, and one 4-track EP, at a time. The most recent song, from the ridiculously titled Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, to hit the Internet, “Freak,” is by far the best song the new Pumpkins have recorded. The “reunion” album was a complete failure and sounded as disjointed as an album could with leader Billy Corgan’s ego flooding the work.
Now, it appears, the new band may actually be on to something. Following the first installment of the 11-EP epic album, the second installment leads with “Freak,” and shows that Corgan may still have a few gems left up his sleeves. As the song hearkens back to earlier, much more beloved, works like Gish and Siamese Dream.
