By now you’re likely familiar with the lead single from the New Moon Soundtrack, Death Cab For Cutie’s “Meet Me On the Equinox”. Today, those of you that don’t already have the Soundtrack were introduced to the second single, Anya Marina’s “Satellite Heart”. Marina is no stranger to the NMS, as she was featured back in May. Marina was a great guest when she was in studio earlier this year, so I’m excited to share another of her songs with you.
Reaction to the song was mostly positive. Dave called in to say he was already sick of the breathy female singer/songwriter sound that he says has been blowing up over the last year. Not entirely sure what he was talking about, there aren’t too many breathy female singer/songwriters out there, to be honest. Natalie sent a text saying, “I love this song! Lets hear more of it!” I also received several anonymous texts that agreed. One read, “i loved this song in the movie! I think she has a very unique voice and i like it alot.”
If you missed today’s Spotlight, you can hear “Satellite Heart” on Marina’s MySpace page. You can also find her on Facebook, Twitter and her official website.
What do you think of the song?
Hailing from London, but founded by a Swede, Fanfarlo is starting to make waves stateside. The band toured some with Snow Patrol earlier this year, and they were in Salt Lake just last weekend. (I missed the show, unfortunately.) Their album Resevoir is out and available and features today’s spotlight: “Harold T. Wilkins”.
The Big Pink are from London, and they’ve had quite a good 2009. They received NME’s new artist award at the magazine’s yearly music awards. They also were signed by label 4AD which is the esteemed home of the Pixies. The band has a lot of electronic elements to its sound, but is still a rock band at heart. Today’s Spotlight, “Dominos,” is a very upbeat, almost dancey number.
Scott Weiland, best known for his lead rolls in Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, is also an accomplished solo artist. His second album, “Happy” In Galoshes, was released about this time last year, but was shelved, promotionally speaking, as he rejoined his STP cohorts for some good old world domination. Now the ship is sailing again as Weiland releases the third single from his second solo album.

Colbie Caillat is one of many artists that 101.9 The End proudly brags about being one of the first stations in the country to play. She is now enjoying the success of her sophomore album, Breakthrough. The second single from that release is today’s Spotlight: “I Never Told You”. This is one of the songs she played at her recent End Zone (which you can listen to at
One Eskimo were in town earlier this year opening for Tori Amos. I had several listeners at the time say they really enjoyed the band, but didn’t know who they were. Well, now you know. Their self-titled album was released in September and features today’s Spotlight, “Kandi”. The song is a mellow but catchy tune, and includes a sample of the Candi Staton song “He Called Me Baby,” thus the androgynous lyrics where a guy is singing about “he called me baby.”
