Album Cover Meme

This has been going around Facebook for a while now, and I decided that I wanted to waste a few minutes and create mine, too.

Here’s how you do it:

1. Go to “wikipedia.” Hit “random… Read More” or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random. The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.
2. Go to “Random quotations” or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3. The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.
3. Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days” or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days. Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
4. Use photoshop or similar to put it all together.
5. Post it to FB (or your blog) with this text.

Coachella Discovery #4: Craze and Klever, Crystal Castles, Dear and the Headlights

I’ve decided that I’m going to morph this series from bands that I’m discovering on the Coachella lineup to just covering all the bands. That’s a bit more of an undertaking, but I think in the next 49 days if I stay disciplined and do one a day with two or more bands I should be able to cover them all. Fingers crossed!

Today’s Discovery features three groups of differing familiarity to me. I’ve never heard of Craze and Klever, I’m mildly familiar with Crystal Castles having downloaded a bootleg compilation of theirs, and Dear is from Phoenix and I’ve seen them live a couple of times. Without further ado, let’s jump into this and check out Craze and Klever first.

New Music Spotlight #28: Beck

War Child presents Heroes is an interesting concept for a compilation album. Rather than collecting artists and having them record covers on their own accord, they instead went to established artists and had them hand pick the band/artist that would cover their song. How cool would it be to have Bob Dylan call you up and ask you to cover “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat”? Me thinks it would be pretty kickass.

The album is a benefit for “children who live with the brutal effects of war.” It’s a great charity, and they put out a heck of a benefit CD with Heroes. If you would like more information on War Child, you can find it at warchild.org.

Apologies From the Airborne Toxic Event

The Airborne Toxic Event are a band on the rise. Their song “Sometime Around Midnight” has slowly been building support and radio play nationwide. They were supposed to play at Murray Theater on February 21st, but ended up cancelling the show.

New Music Spotlight #27: U2

Last week U2 became the first band featured a second time on NMS here on 101.9 The End. They’re moving up in the world as they are featured a third time today. With the new album’s release less than a week away, we’ve been featuring more songs from what Rolling Stone‘s David Fricke calls “their best since Achtung Baby” and awards 5-stars. For the record, I think this is a good album, but I don’t think it’s 5-star worthy.

I actually recieved a copy of the CD in the mail today!

Coachella Discovery #3: Cage The Elephant, Conor Oberst

Another in the series! I’m going through the Coachella lineup and highlighting the bands that I’m not already familiar with. This is both for my personal education and for yours. Enjoy reading.

So I was listening to Cage the Elephant today, a band I’ve never even heard of let alone gotten familiar with, and it’s VERY G.Love. Like, it almost sounds like it could be G.Love in the band. But it isn’t G.Love, it’s Matt Schultz. I liked the song on Coachella.com enough to find their MySpace page and listen to some other songs. I must say, they are on the list of bands that I’ll check out, assuming no major conflicts.

Lily Allen Does It For Me

Lily Allen is an attractive woman. She does it for me, for sure. Which is why I had to share her performance from the Tonight Show about a week ago. I only just watched it last night; I DVR most the late night shows, just for the music mostly, and was going through the back log last night.

New Music Spotlight #26: Death Cab For Cutie

Death Cab For Cutie have been a staple of radio since their breakthrough album Transatlanticism. Their latest album Narrow Stairs continues that tradition with several great songs. The video for today’s NMS is a hilarious look at what Death Cab do with their time off.

The band is playing some shows around the US soon, but nothing confirmed for Utah right now. If that changes, we’ll let you know.

New Music Spotlight #25: Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode are a staple for 101.9 The End. As such, when they put out a new song, it’s an event. No less with their latest offering “Wrong” from their forthcoming album Sounds Of The Universe.

The response from listeners was mostly along the lines of “I love it!” or “It’s gonna have to grow on me.” I understand both positions. I don’t love the song, per se, but it has started to grow on me after about 5 listens. The new album comes out April 21st and the band will appear in Salt Lake on August 25th (details TBA).

They haven’t posted the song on their MySpace page, but you can hear a different mix on imeem. You can also find the band on Facebook and their official website.

Coachella Discovery #2: Beirut, Buraka Som Sistema

I’ve been to several Coachella festivals, but I usually focus on seeing bands that I already know and want to see, or bands that my friends want to see. This year I’ve decided to go through the lineup and discover the bands that I’m not already familiar with. In Coachell Discovery #1 we met Albert Cross and Bajofondo. In that post I found a band that I’m not really going to bother with (Alberta Cross) and a band that I am interested in seeing more from (Bajofondo). Here today, we have a similar situation.

Prior to this post, I was familiar with Beirut in name only, after watching a video and listening to a second song on Coachella.com, I’m not sure I’ll take the time to look into them any further. Buraka Som Sistema, however, is like Bajofondo in that I am intrigued by the song on Coachella.com and may have to make time for their performance on April 17th.
